PETERSEN MEDIA- Mechanical issues plagued Richard Vander Weerd and his Vander Weerd Racing team in both his winged sprint car on Friday night and his non winged sprint car on Saturday night, but the Visalia, CA driver was able to salvage his weekend with a second place finish aboard the Mike Sala owned midget Saturday night in Tulare, CA.

“On the sprint car side of things it was frustrating,” Vander Weerd said. “We didn’t even get to run heat races or features so that was disappointing.”

Though plagued in the sprint car, Vander Weerd got the call to run the Mike Sala owned No. 19 midget on Saturday night at the Thunderbowl Raceway, and had a very strong run.

Timing in seventh fastest in qualifying time trials, Vander Weerd would finish in the sixth spot during heat race action. By way of his finish, Vander Weerd would not get his time back for the feature event, and would line up in the sixth row for the 30-lapper.

From the back of the pack, Vander Weerd had his elbows up as he methodically worked his way through the field, and towards the front.

Getting into the third spot, Vander Weerd would go to work on Trey Marcham for the second spot. Battling with Marcham, Vander Weerd would finally get into second, as he chased after race leader, Brady Bacon in the closing laps.

Running out of time, Vander Weerd would close his night out with a second place finish, as he now gets set to head to Pennsylvania and battle with the USAC National Sprint Cars.

“It was an awesome run in the midget, and I think Mike Sala for the chance to run his car,” Vander Weerd said. “Now it’s time to turn my attention to the USAC Eastern Storm, and I am very excited to work with Tim Hogue and drive his car.”

Richard and his Vander Weerd Racing team would like to thank Vander Weerd Construction, Stonegate Development, Battery Worx, Mid-Valley Pipe, Basic Industries, Steve Watt Enterprises, FK Rod Ends, PXP Raceway and K&N for their support in 2015.

2015 BY THE NUMBERS: Starts-19, Wins-5, Top 5’s-8, Top 10’s-11.

ON TAP: Richard will now head East, with his first race being Tuesday night at the Grandview Speedway. Wednesday night he will be at the Lincoln Speedway, and Thursday night the New Egypt Speedway before having a scheduled night off on Friday. Saturday night the action picks back up as he takes to the Port Royal Speedway before bringing his week to a close on Sunday night at the Susquehanna Speedway Park.
