Tony Gomes Works Way To 9th After Early Trip to Work Area

PETERSEN MEDIA- Through two starts with C&M Motorsports thus far in 2024, Tony Gomes has shown the ability to overcome adversity and pass cars. One week removed from a charge with the Sprint Car Challenge Tour, Gomes overcame an early tangle and trip to the work area as he clawed his way back to a ninth-place finish at Placerville Speedway Saturday night.

“After a turbulent week at Merced Speedway, we had a smooth night going until things went off the rails a few laps into Saturday’s feature,” Tony Gomes said. “On an early restart things got out of sorts in front of me, and getting some damage from it, we gave up a spot in the Top-5 and had to go to the work area.”

Timing the Lund Construction/Anrak/Sam Rhodes backed No. 7c entry in fifth fastest in his qualifying flight, Gomes earned a front row starting position for his heat race.

On a Placerville Speedway surface that was in great shape, the Modesto, CA pilot jumped into the lead and never looked back.

Picking up the win, Gomes securely locked himself into the feature, but also earned a berth in the redraw to set the first eighth starting spots in the 30-lap finale.

Pulling the six, Gomes rolled off the starting grid from the outside of the third row. Working the bottom in the early stanzas, Gomes ran in the fifth position. On a lap seven restart, trouble struck in front of him, and with no way to avoid the fray, he endured some damage to his C&M Motorsports entry and was forced to the work area.

With his team able to make repairs, Gomes was able to restart the race, though he had his work cut out for himself as he restarted 17th.

Using patience while mired deep in the field, Gomes was able to mount a charge as he worked his way through the field. Taking spots where he could get them, Gomes methodically worked his way back up to finish ninth when the checkered flag was displayed to the field.

“The way our night was going, I really thought we would be battling up front and not for a Top-10, but that’s the way it goes in the game at times,” Tony Gomes said. “Really thankful that Cody, Bobby, and Rich worked hard all night, and thankful we had some extra hands come over in the work area. Really excited for another season with Cody and Mandi, and eager to get back this weekend and hopefully have a little redemption.”

The C&M Motorsports team would like to thank Lund Construction, Anrak, Sam Rhodes, Alturas Tires, Swartz Diesel, Adrian Blanco Jewelry, Kings Meats, American Paving Systems, PT Shocks, Creason Enterprises, and all of their product sponsors for their continued support.
