PETERSEN MEDIA: Traveling to Skagit Speedway in Alger, WA over the weekend to pilot a potent Rutz Racing entry at the Summer Nationals, Justyn Cox would have a ton of speed, but circumstances would hinder him from recording finishes to show how good the car was.
“We had a really fast racecar, we just really didn’t have things go our way,” Justyn Cox said. “Friday night I made a mistake going for fourth, and then had a pretty good wreck, and on Saturday I went for a big move for the lead late and spun. Tough weekend, but thanks to all the Rutz guys for working so hard.”
Kicking the event off on Friday night, Cox timed the Rutz Racing entry in sixth quickest in time trials before racing his way to a second place finish in his heat race behind Cam Smith.
Moving into the preliminary night feature event, Cox would take the green flag from the seventh starting position. On a racy Skagit Speedway, the Clarksburg, CA driver would work into fifth, and looked for more with the Top-4 locking into Saturday night’s feature.
On a restart just after the race’s halfway point, Cox would dip low trying to get into fourth and a little contact would ensue resulting in him spinning to a stop. Going to the back of the pack, a little salt in the wound would be hard contact resulting in a wild ride for Cox and causing a whole bunch of damage.
Spending much of Saturday morning get the car put back together, Cox would come out swinging as he again timed in sixth quickest in time trials and went on to win his heat race.
Lining up in the second row of the 40-lap affair, Cox would jump into third when he would ride around chasing after Seth Bergman and Jason Solwold. A lap 14 restart saw Cox make a big move to power into the race lead, but as fate would have it, the yellow flag flew and negated his pass.
Back underway, Cox would battle with Bergman for position before tripping over the cushion and allowing JJ Hickle to sneak by. Getting collected, Cox would get the No. 8c machine wound back up and would get back by Hickle with 10-to-go as he set his sights back on Bergman and Solwold.
In a torrid battle for the top spot, Cox would push the issue too hard on the 38thlap and he would lose the handle with two-to-go, and bring his night to an end.
“Saturday I really was trying to turn it on and make something happen with two-to-go,” Cox said. “It just didn’t work out. Bummer way to end our weekend, but still had a blast and very thankful to have had such a great opportunity.”
