Tough Gold Cup Showing for Andy Forsberg

PETERSEN MEDIA: Taking part in the 71st Gold Cup Race of Champions in Chico, CA, Andy Forsberg didn’t have his best showing, and the veteran driver has already turned his attention this weekend’s event in Calistoga, CA.

“It was a tough Gold Cup each night we were in action,” Andy Forsberg said. “Wednesday night we had a great heat but just couldn’t get going in a non stop feature. Thursday night, I did a really bad job and put us in a deep hole for Saturday, and Saturday we just couldn’t dig out and make the show. My team worked way too hard to have a showing like that and I am ultimately a little irritated with myself.”

Kicking the busy weekend off on Wednesday night in 360ci action, Forsberg timed the PHR/Meridian Cameras/Oroville Tax backed No. 92 entry in 15th fastest with 40 cars in the pit area.

Lining up eighth in his heat race, Forsberg had some things go his way on the opening lap and he was able to power his way into fourth in just one lap. Hanging on to finish fourth, the Auburn, CA driver locked into the ‘A’, where he took the green flag from the 15th starting position.

In a feature event that went non-stop, Forsberg just couldn’t get anything going as he struggled to make speed on the fast surface. Maintaining 15th for all 30-laps, he capped the night off with a 15th place finish.

Returning to High Limit Racing action on Thursday night for his qualifying run at the Gold Cup Race of Champions, Forsberg timed in 16th quickest in time trials, before a sixth place run in his heat race put him in the night’s ‘B’ Main.

Lining up third in the semi, Forsberg held on to a transfer spot as his fourth place finish locked him into the opening night 30-lap feature event. From the 24th starting position, Forsberg finished 20th which then put him in the fourth row of a Saturday night qualifier.

Heading into Saturday night’s Gold Cup Race of Champions finale looking got make a run and race into the feature, Forsberg’s night got off to a pretty good start as he was able to race from eighth to fifth in his qualifier and put himself in a decent spot in the ‘B’ for once final shot to lock in.

Taking the green from the eighth starting position in the 15-lap semi, Forsberg raced into seventh by the halfway point. With the track getting bottom dominant, Forsberg looked to make the high-side work as he needed a few more positions to earn his way into the ‘A’.

Getting up top, it just was too far around at that point and Forsberg dropped a few positions. In the end, he capped his Gold Cup off with a 13th place finish in the ‘B’.

“We had a great car on Saturday and we had really good speed, but my performance on Thursday night was just too much for us to overcome,” Forsberg said. “Gold Cup is one of those races that I really good at, or really bad at and this year was one of those really bad years.”
