PETERSEN MEDIA: Engaged in an all out brawl with Klint Simpson on Saturday night at Petaluma Speedway during the 50-lap Soares Classic, Austin Liggett gave it his all on the race’s last lap and came within just .024 seconds of the win.

“That was a fun race,” Austin Liggett said. “I have no idea how my last lap pass attempt stuck, but I went for it and really made it exciting.”

Timing the C&H Veteran Enterprises/Excel Environmental Services/Benic Enterprises No. 51 machine in second fastest amongst the 19 cars checked into Petaluma Speedway, Liggett would proceed to drive from fourth to second in his heat race.

Advancing into the Dash, Liggett would pull the five pill and do another nice job of moving forward in the six-lap affair as he worked his way to second; putting him on the front row of the feature event.

From his outside front row starting position, the Tracy, CA wheel man would jump out to the early lead, and look extremely strong during the opening 25-laps as he led the entire way up until the scheduled red flag stop.

Back underway, war would wage between Liggett and second running Simpson, as they were simply head and shoulders better than the rest of the field. Battling back and forth exchanging the top spot, the duo was seemingly tied together for the second half of the feature event.

Falling into the second spot when the yellow flag flew on the 45th lap, Liggett would see Simpson get a bit of a gap on the ensuing restart. Giving it his all, Liggett took the white flag in the second spot and left everything he had on the Petaluma Gumbo.

Going into turn three and four wide open on the cushion, Liggett went for glory and came up just short at the checkered flag as he fell just .024 seconds back of the race win.

“I knew I had to try something, and it about worked out for us,” Liggett said. “I can’t thank Brian Sperry and everyone involved for giving me such a strong car again.”

Brian Sperry Racing would like to thank C&H Veteran Enterprises, Excel Environmental Services, Benic Enterprise, Santomauro Racing Products, Jarrett Soares Racing, and Bailey Bros. Racing Engines for their support in 2017.

2017 BY THE NUMBERS: Races-12, Wins-6, Top 5’s-12, Top 10’s-12
