PETERSEN MEDIA: Making his second start of the season at Petaluma Speedway on Saturday night with the C&H Veteran Enterprises Joe Hunt Magnetos Wingless Series, Austin Liggett would make things exciting at the end of the night as he came within a fraction of a second of picking up his sixth win of the season aboard the Brain Sperry Racing No. 51.

“We ran fourth most of the race, and late we were able to get into third,” Liggett explained. “There was a late red flag and I went for it and almost came out a hero but we ended up second. Still a great result for this race team.”

A total of 25 cars checked into the bay area facility on Saturday night, and Liggett got off to a great start by timing the C&H Veteran Enterprises/Excel Environmental Services/Benic Enterprises backed No. 51 entry in fourth fastest.

Going on to finish third in his heat race, the series point leader would earn a spot in the Dash by way of his heat finish mixed with his qualifying effort. Going seventh to fifth in the Dash despite breaking a shock, Liggett would put his machine in the third row for the feature event.

Getting the BSR entry fixed and ready for the feature event, Liggett would settle into the fourth position as the race got going. Fighting for a spot on the podium, the Tracy, CA driver would finally get into the third spot just before a late red flag bunched the field up for a two-lap shootout.

With one final shot at surging into the race lead, Liggett would stalk the lead duo as they took the white flag running side by side. As they washed up the racetrack, Liggett did everything he could to make the bottom work and was able to finish in the second spot in what was an extremely tight finish.

“I think if there was a little more grip on the bottom we pick up the win, but I have to congratulate McClain on a hard fought win,” Liggett added. “Brian, and my parents worked hard all night long, and I thank them for all they continue to do for me.”

Brian Sperry Racing would like to thank C&H Veteran Enterprises, Excel Environmental Services, Benic Enterprise, Santomauro Racing Products, Jarrett Soares Racing, and Bailey Bros. Racing Engines for their support in 2017.

2017 BY THE NUMBERS: Races-9, Wins-5, Top 5’s-9, Top 10’s-9

ON TAP: Liggett will be back in action on Saturday night as he climbs aboard his Austin Liggett Racing No. 83 machine and travels to Hanford, CA to take on the USAC West Coast 360’s.
