PETERSEN MEDIA: Austin Liggett had high hopes heading into the 2017 Oval Nationals at Perris Auto Speedway. Having his best season to date, Liggett teamed with Phulps Motorsports for the weekend, but the end result wasn’t quite what either party had hoped for.
“I am extremely thankful to have had the opportunity to compete with Phulps entry at Oval Nationals,” Austin Liggett said. “It is tough to learn each other in a short period of time, and that translated into our results.”
Bother Thursday and Friday night saw the Tracy, CA driver time in poorly, but he was able to take advantage of prime starting positions in his heat race to make both preliminary night feature events.
Thursday night the 2017 Hunt Series Champion recorded a 20th place finish and Friday night he would score an 18th place finish after getting into the wall and bringing out a caution during the feature event.
Saturday night’s finale saw Liggett time the famed No. 56 machine in 12th quickest in qualifying time trials, but a fourth place finish in his heat would place him in the night’s B Main.
Unable to make the transfer through the semi, Liggett would be credited with a 10th place finish.
“Mike Phulps, Kerry Fasig, and Ryan Riley are a great group of guys to work with,” Liggett added. “It was a great opportunity, and I can’t thank them all enough for thinking of me.”
