PETERSEN MEDIA- Getting the 2018 King of the West/NARC season kicked off Sunday night in Bakersfield, CA, Colby Copeland would battle back from an early race issue to finish 14th at Kern County Raceway Park.

“We had some mechanical issues early in the feature that forced us to the tail end of the field, and the track ended up being really tough to pass on,” Colby Copeland said. “We felt pretty good and were able to make up some spots to salvage the night a little with a 14th place finish.”

Timing the Good Guys Rod and Custom Association/Fuel Curve/Fire Protection Management No. 16A entry in 17th quickest in qualifying time trials, the Roseville, CA driver would line up in the third row of the second heat race.

Able to pick up a couple of positions in heat race action, Copeland’s fourth place effort would not earn him enough points to move into the Dash, so he would find himself in the 17th starting position for the 30-lap feature event.

Being on the bottom groove at the start of the race would prove to be beneficial for Copeland as he would quickly work his way up to 15th in the race’s opening two laps.

The third lap would see him coast to a stop and take his machine to the work area with some issues under the hood. Able to make repairs, Copeland would re join the field though he would have his work cut out for himself as he took the green flag in the 20th position.

With the track racing narrow with much of the field using the bottom groove, Copeland would be forced to be patient as he looked to work his way forward.

Jumping back up to 18th, Copeland would take over 16th just prior the halfway point of the race. Continuing to run a very patient race while working the bottom, Copeland would pick up a few more positions in the closing laps as he took the checkered flag in 14th.

“The  bottom was just too good, and you couldn’t get anything going if you tried the top,” Copeland added. “Trevor and Larry worked hard all night and we will try again in a couple of weeks.”

Antaya Motorsports would like to thank Good Guys Rod and Custom Association, Fuel Curve, Fire Protection Management, Inc.,  and Kaeding Performance for their support in 2018.
