PETERSEN MEDIA- When a wild 2017 Trophy Cup came to a close, Cory Eliason would finish 10th in the Saturday night feature and 10th in the points, but he was able to look back be proud of winning his first career race at the Thunderbowl.

“To come away 10th after going into Saturday night sitting third in points stings a little, but looking back to win my first race ever in Tulare, CA during Trophy Cup is pretty cool,” Cory Eliason said. “I have to thank Larry, Brian, Skip, and everyone else that helped on this car all week long. It is a tough week, and it was really good to be in the hunt during the finale.”

90 cars checked in for the marquee event, and Eliason would get things kicked off by timing the Good Guys Rod and Custom Association/Fuel Curve backed No. 20 machine timed in seventh quickest on opening night.

Finishing sixth in his heat race, Eliason would finish seventh in the semi, which brought his opening night to an early end. With the Trophy Cup taking your best point night into Saturday’s finale, the pressure would be on heading into Friday’s qualifying night for the Antaya Motorsports team.

Timing in 13th quickest on Friday night, Eliason would have a very strong heat race that saw him race to a second place finish. Moving into the ‘B’ Main again, Eliason would pick up a second place finish and transfer into the 30-lap feature event.

Sitting 11th in points heading into the feature, Eliason would find himself on the front row of the ‘A’ alongside Tanner Thorson. On a hooked up, and rough racing surface, Eliason would stalk Thorson for much of the race. Staying right with his competitor, Eliason would take advantage of a late bobble and race his way to his first career win at the famed raceway.

Sitting third in points heading into Saturday night’s finale, Eliason had momentum on his side. With the track extremely fast in heat races, moving forward from eighth proved to be tough. Finishing seventh in his heat, Eliason would slip back to ninth in points heading into the feature event which placed him 12th on the starting grid for the 50-lap feature event.

The track would continue to hold up and keep moisture in it, which created an extremely fast racing surface. Battling with some extremely talented racecar drivers all trying to get to the front and continue to create points, passing would prove to be tough.

Able to work into the Top-10, Eliason would close his weekend out with a 10th place finish in the race as well as in the 2017 Trophy Cup standings.

“Obviously we wish Saturday would have gone better, but we worked with the hand we were dealt,” Eliason added. “We fought hard, and came home 10th in the race, and in the points so overall it was a success.”

Antaya Motorsports would like to thank Good Guys Rod and Custom Association, Fuel Curve, Fire Protection Management, Inc.,  and Kaeding Performance for their support in 2017.
