PETERSEN MEDIA: Making the trip to the Ocean Speedway and Thunderbowl Raceway over the weekend with the King of the West Series, Justyn Cox would have a very strong weekend that was highlighted by a third place finish in Tulare, CA.
“It was probably one of our best weekends of the year,” Cox said. “We ran well at Ocean on Friday night and ended up sixth after a late race pile up, and on Saturday night we led some laps and ended up with a third place finish at the toughest track on the circuit.”
Opening the busy weekend up on Friday night at the scenic Ocean Speedway in Watsonville, CA, the Clarksburg, CA driver would time his Berco Redwood/Berry Lumber/Trex backed No. 31c machine in 11th fastest before winning his heat race.
With his engine going south in the final laps of the heat, Cox and company would be forced to sit out the Dash as they bolted a fresh power plant into the Cox Racing No. 31BC.
Taking the green flag from the eighth starting spot, Cox would run in that spot for much of the race as the first 22-laps went non stop. The first restart of the night would see Cox fall outside of the Top-10 as he was back in the 12th spot. With things getting wild in the final laps, Cox was able to hold strong and take the checkered flag with a sixth place finish.
Looking to build off the positive night, Cox and company would follow the series to Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, CA where he would time his entry in eighth fastest in time trials.
Winning his heat race for the second night in a row, Cox would move into the Dash where a second place finish would put him on the front row of the 30-lap feature event alongside Kyle Hirst.
With Hirst getting inot the cushion wrong on the opening lap, Cox would take advantage and find himself out front. With a myriad of cautions plaguing the first half of the race, Cox was able to keep the field at bay as he continued to lead the way.
A lap 12 restart, however, would see Cox leave the door open for Hirst who would slide up in front of him and take over the race lead. While Cox tried to counter his move, Hirst was able to keep him at bay, though Cox would soon find himself in a battle with Bud Kaeding.
Going toe-to-toe with the defending Trophy Cup champion, Cox and Kaeding would thrill the crowd as they exchanged sliders lap-after-lap for what seemed like the entire second half of the race. Though Kaeding would get the best of Cox, he would still finish in the third spot.
“I got out expeiernced by two veteran’s who are really good at Tulare,” Cox said. “We had a really good racecar, and I am happy with a third place finish.”
