Joel Myers Jr Wins New Zealand Championship

PETERSEN MEDIA: Heading from the Anderson Motorsports team headquarters on the South Island in New Zealand, Joel Myers Jr made his first ever appearance at Auckland’s Western Springs Speedway memorable as he had a strong showing that culminated with him winning his first ever New Zealand Sprint Car Championship.

“It is great to win the biggest race of the year in New Zealand,” Joel Myers Jr said. “I am excited to get this win for the Anderson family, and on a personal level its very cool to win this title and have such a strong connection with the New Zealand fans.”

Friday night’s program was strictly all drivers running a trio of heat race to tabulate points heading into Saturday’s finale.

Myers Jr got the weekend off to a great start as he lined up in the sixth starting position of his first heat race before racing his way through the field and pocketing a second place finish.

Going from fourth to third in his second heat race on a very slick surface, Myers Jr capped the night off by winning his third heat race from the pole and he found himself in a tie atop the point standings with Michael Pickens.

Two more heat races on Saturday night saw the Sebastopol, CA driver continued to adapt well to the famed stadium speedway as he went from ninth to fifth in his first heat and seventh to fourth in his final heat race of the weekend as he was the high point earner heading into the New Zealand Title feature event.

Lining up on the front row of the championship finale, Myers Jr would fend off New Zealand front runners, Jonathan Allard and Michael Pickens in the early goings for the race as he showed he was a very heavy favorite to win the title.

No matter who moved into second, Myers Jr was unphased as he continued to work the slick surface to perfection.

When the checkered flag flew, Myers was the first to accept it as he picked up his first career New Zealand Championship, and ignited a huge celebration.

“It’s great to be able to represent the country with the 1NZ number,” Myers Jr said. “Just a great feeling for everyone involved with this team. Very thankful for all of our supporters.”
