PETERSEN MEDIA: After debuting together back in January, Justyn Cox and Mike Phulps Motorsports returned to action on Saturday night in Tulare, CA where Cox forged his way to a third place finish with the Kings of Thunder Series.
“After timing in pretty poorly, we rebounded well and really made it a good night for our team,” Justyn Cox said. “Thanks to Mike, Ryan, Kerry, and everyone involved with this team for making Saturday possible.”
Timing the Long Creek Winery/Metal Works/Keizer Wheels backed No. 56 machine in 14th fastest in time trials, the Clarksburg, CA driver would find himself on the front row of his heat race.
Needing the win to move into the Dash, Cox would get beat on the start and would end up finishing second. While good enough to transfer into the feature, Cox would find himself 14th on the starting grid when everything played out.
With the opening portion of the race being mired by stoppages, Cox was able to keep his nose clean and slowly work his way forward. When the race finally got into a green flag run, Cox was able to find a line that worked well for him and it showed as he moved his way forward with conviction.
Getting better and better as the race moved along, Cox would get up into third as he got my Shane Golobic and Cole Macedo.
Though he wasn’t able to get up and challenge from the top spot, Cox would cap a strong night as he charged from 14th to finish third.
“We got better as the night went on, and I am really happy with how we feel after just two nights together,” Justyn Cox said. “It should be a fun year with Mike Phulps Racing, and I am excited to be a part of it.”
