PETERSEN MEDIA- After a two-week break, Kyle Hirst and his Roth Motorsports team returned to action in Northern California as they took part in the Tyler Wolf Memorial on Friday night in Chico, CA before running second in Placerville, CA on Saturday night during the Mark Forni Classic.

“First off I have to thank my guys Cori Guy and Michael Helwig for busting their buts on Saturday,” Kyle Hirst said. “I made a mistake during the feature on Friday night and it led to a tore up racecar, and they busted their butt’s to get us ready for Placerville.”

Friday night’s Tyler Wolfe Memorial marked the final 410ci event at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, CA until September’s 65th Annual Gold Cup Race of Champions. Looking to get some last minute info before the big race and pay respects to the late Tyler Wolf, Hirst and company checked in and proceeded to time the Roth Enterprises/HR Livestock Transportation/Roth Investments machine in third quickest in time trials.

Running fourth in his heat race, the Paradise, CA driver would win the Dash and lead the field to green for the 25-lap feature event. When the race came to life, Hirst would jump out to the early lead as he would be flanked by the likes of Tanner Thorson and Andy Forsberg.

Leading nearly the first half of the race, Hirst would feel pressure from Thorson on a lap 11 restart. As Hirst rode the high side in turns three and four, he would misjudge it a little and hang his right rear off the racing surface and get sideways. Jumping on the throttle to straighten out, Hirst would shoot down the race track and collect a couple of other drivers and ultimately end his night.

With a beaten and battered Roth Motorsports entry, the team would spend much of the day getting the car repaired and ready for the 13th Annual Mark Forni Classic at Placerville Speedway.

Timing in second quickest on this night, Hirst would run second in his heat race and again find himself safely in the redraw. Finding himself with the three pill, Hirst would take the green flag from the second row as he searched for his second Forni Classic score.

When the race got underway, Hirst would settle into third where he would run for the first handful of laps until an on track incident put him in second. The ensuing restart would KH and Justyn Cox battle for the runner up position with Hirst slipping back into the show position.

Settling into third, Hirst would chase after the lead duo of Justyn Cox and Shane Golobic as the field tip-toed around an extremely slick Placerville Speedway racing surface.

Running in third on the 17th lap, the caution would fly and it would bunch the field back up into double-file formation. Slipping back to fourth when the green flag was again displayed, Hirst would jump back into second on the 19th lap as he then felt immense pressure from Tanner Thorson.

Thorson and Hirst would battle hard during the final five-laps as Hirst was able to fend him off and take second when the dust settled on the race.

“Saturday night we kind of struggled to make grip on an extremely slick surface,” Hirst said. “It was tough to get going forward, but we did a great job of putting ourselves in a good spot going into the feature and we hung on to second. Big thanks to Dennis and Teresa Roth for continuing to let us have some fun. It is a great time of the year in California and we will head down to the Key Classic this weekend and try again.”

The Roth Motorsports team would like to thank Roth Enterprises, HR Livestock Transportation, Roth Investments, 3H Cattle, FK Rod Ends, Weld Wheels, Brown and Miller Racing Solutions, Kent Performance, Kaeding Performance, and Astro Titanium for their support in 2018.

BY THE NUMBERS: Races: 36, Wins: 10, Top 5’s: 26, Top 10’s: 28.
