PETERSEN MEDIA: Making the trip to Tulsa, OK to take part in the 32nd Annual Chili Bowl Midget Nationals for just the second time in his career, Tracy, CA driver, Austin Liggett, was pleased with how things went as he qualified for the Saturday night ‘C’ Main with over 350 cars entered.
“We had a really good prelim night, and it put us in a really good spot on Saturday night,” Austin Liggett said. “Obviously you always want to do better, but I really can’t complain how the week went.”
Hitting the Tulsa Expo Raceway on Wednesday night for his qualifying night, Liggett got off to a good start in the Finkenbinder Motorsports entry. Lining the No. 3F machine up in the second row of his heat race, the 2017 Hunt Series Champion earned valuable points as he raced his way up to finish second and move on to a qualifier race.
Gridding the field from the second row in his qualifier, Liggett would battle with Gary Taylor and Ryan Robinson before finishing fifth which forced him into on e of two ‘B’ Mains. Lining up on the pole, Liggett would lead the way from start to finish and work his way into the preliminary night feature event.
From his 18th starting position, Liggett would run into a couple of issues during the feature event, but he would not give in to the turbulence as each position on track was valuable to Saturday night line up position.
Finishing 14th when the checkered flag waived on the night, Liggett was in a decent position for Saturday night as he would be in the ‘C’ Main event.
Taking the green flag from ‘C’ No. 2 from the fourth row, Liggett would need to finish inside the Top-Six to keep his Chili Bowl going. Working his way up into the sixth and final transfer position at one time in the race, Liggett would get into the front stretch wall which resulted in a flat right rear tire, forcing him to the back.
Unable to bounce back, Liggett would close his week out with a 15th place finish.
“It was a frustrating way to end our week, but it was a solid performance for the team which I am very thankful to be a part of,” Liggett added. “I have to thank Ted and Rose Finkenbinder for the opportunity to get back to the Chili Bowl, and I also have to thank Dave Higgins and Landon Hurst for working hard to give me a good car. I also have to thank my parents, Angela, Ronnie Gardner, Walt Johnson, and Tim Barber for all of their help during the week.”
