PETERSEN MEDIA: Climbing back aboard the VanDyke Motorsports No. 5H on Saturday night in Marysville, CA for the Spooktacular, Dawson Hammes was amidst a solid night inside the Top-10 until mid-race contact sent him into the wall resulting in him getting upside down.
“We had a pretty good night going, but unfortunately we endured some contact in the feature and went for a pretty good ride,” Dawson Hammes said. “I want to thank Harley VanDyke and Evan for continuing to let me driver the No. 5H car.”
With 28 cars checked in for the tracks’ annual Halloween event, Hammes timed the Sacramento Battery Co. backed No. 5H in 10th fastest in qualifying time trials.
Lining up on the front row of his heat race, the Marysville, CA driver had his elbows up and surged to the win. Picking up the win, Hammes was not only locked into the feature, but was also in the redraw as the seven pill placed him in the fourth row to start the 25-lap feature event.
When the 25-lap feature came to life, Hammes didn’t get the jump he had hoped for as he drifted back and lost a few spots early in the race. Slipping all the way back to 13th at one point, Hammes was able to settle in and work his way back forward.
Getting back into 10th on the 12th lap, Hammes was up into eighth on the 13th circuit. Battling hard for track position, Hammes slipped back to ninth on the 15th lap before contact sent him into the wall and it resulted in him getting upside down.
Enduring heavy damage from the wreck, Hammes’ night came to an end.
“It was less than ideal to have the night end like that,” Hammes said. “It is disappointing, really. I do want to thank my parents, Carson, Ally, my Uncle Tony, Travis, Dalton, and Clay for being there on Saturday and showing their support.”
