PETERSEN MEDIA- Returning to action with the USAC/CRA Series in Lake Perris, CA on Saturday night, Richard Vander Weerd would finish fifth during the series’ annual “Salute to Indy” event at Perris Auto Speedway.
“Our night got off to a pretty good start, but the car just didn’t do what I wanted or needed it to do in the feature,” Vander Weerd explained.
Kicking the night off with qualifying time trials, Vander Weerd timed the Vander Weerd Construction/Stonegate Development/Mid-Valley Pipe No. 10 machine in eighth quickest in the session.
Moving into heat race action, Vander Weerd would finish in the second spot, and move to the feature event where he would find his Mid-Valley Pipe/Basic Industries/FK Shocks machine on the pole for the 30-lap feature event.
Not getting the jump when the green flag was shown to the field, Vander Weerd would run in the second spot in the race’s opening circuits before losing two spots and running in the fourth spot.
Running well in the top-five for the duration of the race, a caution flag would fly on the race’s 28th lap and it would bunch the field back up for a two-lap sprint to the finish.
Going to the bottom groove when the race resumed trying to pick up a couple of late spots, Vander Weerd’s plan would backfire on him as he ended up losing a position and finishing fifth.
“I thought I could make it work with a couple laps to go, but we fell to fifth,” Vander Weerd said. “It was a tough feature, but we will regroup and see what we can do this weekdn in the 360 at Ventrura.”
