PETERSEN MEDIA- Richard Vander Weerd entered the 2017 Trophy Cup to get locked into next years event, but more importantly to get more laps in a winged car, and at the end of it all the Visalia, CA driver was pleased with it.
“The goal every time you go race is to win, but with minimal winged laps, our realistic goal was to get seat time and make laps and we did just that,” Richard Vander Weerd said.
Getting two nights on preliminary action in at the Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, CA, Vander Weerd would finish second in the Thursday night C main and keep his night going into the ‘B’ where he would finish 16th.
Friday night would see the Visalia, CA product have some tough luck as he got upside down in the ‘C’, which ended his night early.
Moving into Saturday night’s finale, Vander Weerd would line the Vander Weerd Construction/Stonegate Development/Mid-Valley Pipe backed No. 10V machine up in the second row of a ‘D’ Main.
Racing his way to a fourth place finish, Vander Weerd’s night would extend as he moved into the ‘C’ Main where he would line up in the last row. From his 19th starting position, Vander Weerd would pick up a few spots on the tricky racing surface as he ended his 2017 Trophy Cup with a 15th place finish in the ‘C’.
“We were able to move forward at times and learn some things, so all in all it was a good weekend of racing,” Vander Weerd added.
