PETERSEN MEDIA- Before the Ocean Speedway took a few weeks off, Tommy Tarlton had been settling into a groove as he picked up consecutive podium finishes. When the track came back to life on Friday night, the Easton, CA returned to form as he scored his first win of the 2016 season.
“I can’t tell you how good it feels to be back in victory lane,” Tarlton said. “Paul Baines and these guys work so hard to give me a great car, so I am absolutely thrilled to get them a win.”
Kicking his night off by timing the Elite Landscape Construction/Tarlton and Son, Inc./Executive Auto Sales No. 21 in fourth fastest in qualifying time trials, which would place him in the second row of his heat race.
Finishing third behind Dustin Golobic and Justin Sanders, Tarlton would move into the nightly dash, where a third place finish would set him up to start in the second row for the 30-lap feature event on the extremely slick ¼ mile raceway.
The early part of the race was slowed due to various caution flags, but once things got underway, Tarlton found himself in the fourth spot chasing after Michael Kofoid and Brad Furr who ran in front of him.
Issues on a lap eight restart would see the race leader get knocked out of competition, and this would move Tarlton up into the third spot. On the 13th lap, Tarlton would get into the second spot as rubber began going down on the speedway.
Closing in on the race leader, Tarlton would capitalize on a mistake on the 17th lap and grab the race lead. Once in front, Tarlton would not be challenged the rest of the way as he would lead the final 13 laps and win by a margin of over four seconds.
“This team has some great partners behind it, and it wouldn’t be possible to do this without all of them,” Tarlton added. “I also want to thank all of the fans for continuing to come out and support sprint car racing.”
