PETERSEN MEDIA- Following the USAC West Coast 360 Series to Ventura Raceway on Saturday night, Richard Vander Weerd had a tough night that resulted in him leaving with an 11th place finish.
“It was a tough night,” Richard Vander Weerd said. “We timed in well, but we got collected in a heat race incident and we really couldn’t make much headway in the feature.”
Getting off to a nice start on Saturday, the Visalia, CA driver timed the Vander Weerd Construction/Stonegate Development/Mid-Valley Pipe machine in second fastest during qualifying time trials.
From the second row of his heat race, Vander Weerd would see a car in front of him lose the handle and with nowhere to go he would get a piece of the action and end up finishing fifth after bringing the caution out.
Not making the inversion, Vander Weerd would end up gridding the field from the 14th starting position on a track that was tricky to make ground up on. Admittedly running a more conservative race, Vander Weerd would pick up a few positions on a tough night and close his night out with an 11th place finish.
“Our night started out pretty good, but it went downhill fast,” Vander Weerd said. “We had issues in our heat race, and it resulted in us lining up pretty deep in the feature event. The way the track was, the only way to make up ground is to get overly aggressive and that really isn’t my style. I got what we could and came away 11th.”
