PETERSEN MEDIA- Traveling to Arizona over the weekend to race with the USAC/CRA Series, Richard Vander Weerd overcame adversity on both nights and was able to pick up a pair of Top-10 finishes at the Canyon Speedway Park.

“We had really good speed both nights, but unfortunately we had an issue arise during both features that sent us to the back,” Vander Weerd explained.

Friday night at the Canyon Speedway Park, Vander Weerd got off to a strong start as he timed the Vander Weerd Construction/Stonegate Development/Batter Worx No. 10 machine in second fastest in time trials before working his way to a third place finish in his heat race.

Lining up sixth in the feature event, the Visalia, CA driver was racing in the top-five when he would bring his machine to a stop on the 10th lap. Able to quickly fix the issue, Vander Weerd would go to work from the back of the pack.

Able to get back into the Top-10, Vander Weerd would take the checkered flag with a ninth place finish.

Back at CSP on Saturday night, Vander Weerd’s night would not get off to as good of a start as he would have hoped as he timed in 12th fastest during time trials. Picking up a second place finish in his heat race, RVW would grid the field from the sixth row for the 30-lap Hall of Fame Classic feature event.

Running in the 12th spot when the red flag flew on the fourth lap, Vander Weerd’s machine would not fire when officials pushed cars back off and he took a trip to the work area. His Vander Weerd Racing crew was able to make a quick fix and Vander Weerd would make the call, though he would again be stuck in the back of the pack.

Just as he did on Friday night, Vander Weerd flexed his muscle as he carved his way around the Canyon Speedway Park picking up positions lap-after-lap. Getting back into the Top-10, Vander Weerd would make a couple of late passes to finish in the seventh spot.

“Both nights I really feel like we had even better cars than where we finished,” Vander Weerd said. “Friday night I think if we don’t come to a stop we battle for a podium, and on Saturday I think we had a car capable of finishing in the Top-Five. We were strong, and I think we showed that coming from the back both nights.”

Richard and his Vander Weerd Racing team would like to thank Vander Weerd Construction, Stonegate Development, Battery Worx, Mid-Valley Pipe, Basic Industries, Factory Kahne Shocks, Steve Watt Enterprises, FK Rod Ends, PXP Racewear and K&N for their support in 2015.

2015 BY THE NUMBERS: Starts-47, Wins-6, Top 5’s-20, Top 10’s-31.

ON TAP: Richard and the Vander Weerd Racing team will be off for the next two weeks as they prepare for the Oval Nationals that are set for November 12th-14th at the Perris Auto Speedway in Lake Perris, CA.
