PETERSEN MEDIA- After competing at the Winter Heat Showdown in January with Tri-C Motorsports, Willie Croft was back aboard his potent Willie Croft Racing No. 29 on Saturday night and picked up a fifth place finish at the Marysville Raceway.
“It was a decent night for us,” Croft said. “We had some things to work out, but we showed some good speed, and ended our night with a top-five.”
25 cars rolled through the pit gate to start the season in California, and Croft bested them all during time trials, as he picked up the quick time award before racing to a second place finish in heat race action.
By way of the redraw, Croft lined up for the 25 lap feature event in the fourth row on what was a hooked up and fast racing surface. With the race coming to life, Croft was on the move toward the top-five as he began battling with the likes of Andy Forsberg and Dominic Scelzi as he raced his way forward.
A couple of yellows were sprinkled into the race stacking the field back up, but the race for third through fifth was entertaining all night, as drivers raced side by side at times jockeying for position.
The lap 16 restart saw the 2014 Trophy Cup Champion line up in the fourth spot, as he chased after Dominic Scelzi, and had Forsberg right behind him. As the drivers continued to battle each other hard, Croft would end his night with a fifth place finish at the stripe.
“It was a good first night out, and I have to thank all of my guys for their help, and hard work,” he added. “We will get better, and head to Chico next weekend for the Silver Cup.”
